Tata Institute of Social Sciences is facing a growing wave of criticism from CUET-PG candidates who say the institute’s normalization methodology was disclosed only after applications had already been submitted — in several cases, not until after the second merit list came out. For students who had already locked in their paper codes and choices, that timing left no room to adjust.

How the Math Actually Works

TISS calculates a candidate’s Normalized Score by taking the difference between a candidate’s raw score and the lowest score in their qualifying pool, dividing that by the gap between the highest and lowest scores in the same pool, then multiplying by 100. The institute defines the “lowest score” as the 25th percentile benchmark and the “highest score” as the top score recorded.

On paper, it’s a standard normalization approach. In practice, students say it wasn’t explained in a way that let them understand its real impact before it mattered.

Why Aspirants Are Furious

Candidates raised a specific set of grievances. No advance clarity was given on how paper-code selection would affect final scores. No weightage information was shared before results. And crucially, students argue the formula fails to account for genuine differences in difficulty and relative performance across different CUET question papers — meaning a strong scorer on a tougher paper could end up normalized lower than a weaker scorer on an easier one.

Representations have already been sent to TISS demanding an official review.

What Students Want Now

The demand is simple: transparency before the fact, not after. Aspirants are calling on TISS to publicly clarify its methodology’s rationale and open a formal review before the admission cycle moves further.

Whether TISS responds with changes or holds its position, this is unlikely to be the last CUET-PG batch to ask the same questions.
